HOW DOES IT WORK?

HostSens is generated through statistical analysis of a vast dataset comprising domains registered across various monitored countries.

Leveraging proprietary technology, we periodically create and maintain extensive samples of ccTLD zone files for each country under observation. These samples, representing 35% to 70% of all registered domains in a given country, ensure statistical significance. By working with such large datasets, HostSens delivers insights with high confidence and minimal margin of error.

Each domain in the HostSens database is mapped to its hosting location using DNS and HTTP analysis. The data is further aggregated by parent companies, enabling the creation of rankings for companies managing the largest number of domains.

Statistics for country code top-level domains (ccTLDs) are primarily based on publicly available data provided by the domain registries in each monitored country.

This process is conducted on a monthly basis, allowing us to track changes in domain ownership and identify domains that have become inactive. HostSens provides up-to-date data for the past six months and a comprehensive twelve-month trend view, offering an in-depth analysis of company activity and market dynamics.

By analyzing ccTLD zone file samples, we count actual domains rather than hostnames or websites, offering a more accurate representation of the market in each monitored country.

Limitations

Due to the sample-based nature of these estimates, they may not perfectly reflect the values that would be obtained from an analysis of all domains within the country.

The identification of companies hosting domains is achieved through an analysis of their associated HTTP and DNS servers. While generally accurate, occasional errors may occur, potentially influencing the identification results.

Furthermore, certain complexities can arise in the identification process. Some companies utilize outsourced services and infrastructure to deliver their own services. Conversely, smaller companies often act as resellers for larger providers. In both scenarios, domains may be incorrectly attributed to the company providing the underlying infrastructure.
